Every standby generator has a service life. When the unit you have is past the point where repairs make sense, the right move is a clean replacement. Huntsville Generator Pros handles residential and light-commercial generator replacements across the Huntsville metro and Madison County.
Repeated failed self-tests over multiple visits. A failed control board on a unit with a discontinued part number. Cracked block, burned valves, or sustained low oil pressure. A unit that is 15 or more years old and starting to throw multiple unrelated faults per year. A unit that was undersized from day one and cannot carry the loads the family actually wants to run. Any of these by themselves does not always mean replacement, but two or more together usually does.
Single component failures on units under 10 years old. A failed transfer switch on a perfectly healthy generator. Battery and basic tune-up issues. A unit that was correctly sized and well maintained but had one bad year. We will not push a replacement when a repair is the right call; we lose money on the truck roll and our reputation if we push unnecessary work.
We start with an on-site assessment, same as a new install. We look at the existing pad, the existing transfer switch, the existing gas and electrical work, and decide what gets reused. Often the pad and the gas line can stay; the transfer switch sometimes can be reused if it matches the new unit's specs; the panel work usually needs at least a refresh. Then we pull permits, schedule the swap, and execute it in one to two days on site. Old unit hauled away.
Replacements are a good moment to revisit the original size. Houses change. Maybe a sunroom got added. Maybe the family upgraded from a heat pump to a heat pump and electric backup. Maybe a well pump went in. We run a fresh load calculation on every replacement and recommend a size that matches the house as it is now, not the house it was 15 years ago.
Sometimes the existing transfer switch can carry through to the new unit. Sometimes it cannot. The driver is the new unit's controller protocol and amperage rating. We test the existing switch during the assessment and tell you honestly whether it stays or goes. If it goes, we replace with a switch matched to the new generator.
